Route 40 Bariloche - Mendoza

 Itinerary: Bariloche - Ruta 40 - Mendoza

Duration: 6 nights - 7 days

Season: September - May

Distance: 1585 km.

 

Flight from Buenos Aires to Bariloche.

Day 1: BARILOCHE - VALLE ENCANTADO - SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES

We start the itinerary towards the north visiting the “Valle Encantado”; its strange volcanic rocks appeared during the formation of the Andes Range. Shapes and abstract forms create a fascinating landscape between the Patagonian steppe and the Andean forest.
Along the valley it is easy to observe condors in their natural environment.
Crossing the bridge over the Alicura lake, we take the gravel road to  the west, along the Traful river up to the entrance of the Lanin National Park. The road continues uphill to the mountain Cordoba Pass (1300 mts)
Several forested Estancias are located in the area.
Arrival in San Martin de los Andes, located on the coast of Lacar Lake. Lodging and dinner at Hosteria. 
 

Day 2: SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES - VILLA PEHUENIA

From the road, the highest peak of the region (3776 mts) an excellent view of the Lanin Volcano can be enjoyed.
We thentake the scenic road of Pehuenia circuit that includes the Valley of the Alumine river and the Pulmari, Ñorquinco and Moquehue lakes.
The Pehuenia Zone is the region of the Pehuenes or sacred Araucarias (monkey-puzzle tree), which cover these lands of volcanic origin.
The seed of the tree has been a staple food of the Mapuche natives for thousands of years.
Lodging at Hosteria on the coast of Lake Alumine.

Day 3: VILLA PEHUENIA

Visit to Batea Mahuida Volcano which has a lagoon in its crater and a sandy coast made up of volcanic sand. Part of the visit by car and the last strech on foot.
During the ascent we go through a forest of Araucarias and Ñires (Nothofagus). From the top of this Volcano there is an amazing view of other famous volcanos: Llaima, Villarrica and Lanin.  
The volcano as well as its surrounding area belong to a native community called “Puel”.

Day 4: VILLA PEHUENIA - PINO HACHADO - CAVIAHUE

We continue towards the north along Road Nr 23 to the International Pass “Pino Hachado.
From there we head to the little town of Loncopue, close to a volcanic formation of "Riscos Bayos" and the spectacular “Cajon del Haucupen” where isolated stone houses and corrals, used by the Mapuches to breed their cattle during the summer months, can be seen.
Towards the west the scenery changes and a high mountain landscape, can be enjoyed. Arrival in Caviahue, located  in the heart of the Cordillera de los Andes, at the foot of the Copahue Volcano and its geothermal springs. Lodging at Hosteria.
Distance: 198 km (48 km gravel road, 150 paved road) Driving time: 3 hours

 

Day 5: Caviahue - Malargue

On today´s journey, the road crosses the Patagonian steppe and the south of Mendoza Province.
The itinerary starts along the Agrio River until Huecu, visiting the “ Salto del Agrio”, a 60 meter waterfall surrounded by basaltic columns.  The road then runs north thru volcanic landscape characterizing the area up to the town of Chos Malal. Taking Ruta 40 to Buta Ranquil , (Barrancas), we can observe the peak of the Tromen Volcano (4114 mts). Crossing the bridge over the Barrancas River, we leave the patagonian region behind to enter the “Cuyo” region. 
The road winds along the Rio Grande where black lava balls  can be easily observed. The condor´s  resting platforms on its shores. Arrival in Malargüe. Lodging at Hotel.

Distance: 470 km (80km gravel road, 390 paved road) Driving time: 6 hours.

 

Day 6: MALARGUE - POSADA SALENTEIN

Drive to Valle del Uco, the youngest wine region in the province of Mendoza. The vineyards are cultivated at a range of elevation that is among the highest in the world (900 m.-1200 m.) and are irrigated with pure mountain water from the Andes. This ideal micro climate produces perfect ripening condition for the grapes.  
Lodging at Posada Salentein, located across from a vineyard.

Distance: 350 km (paved road) Driving time: 4 hours

 

Day 7: BODEGA SALENTEIN - CIUDAD DE MENDOZA

Posada Salentein is located within Finca La Pampa, in Tunuyan, 100 km south of Mendoza city.
Guided tour to the “Bodega Salentein” cellar; visit Killka, the art gallery and wine shop, horseback riding/walking around the vineyards.

Return to Mendoza. Lodging at Hotel. Free dinner.

Day 10: Mendoza - Buenos Aires
